Are the Present Names and Definitions of Principal Pharmaceutical Categories Correct?

M. Řehula

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):251-254

The hitherto editions of Czechoslovak Pharmacopoeias defined the principal pharmaceutical categories. The new Czech Pharmacopoeia 1997, however, does not define them; the definitions are included in Law No. 79/1997 of the Collection, of drugs and changes and supplements of some related laws, valid since 1 April 1988. The principal difference in comparison with the hitherto Czech tradition lies in the new term for the final product, called the medicament (lék) until now. The new law calls this category the medicinal preparation (léčivý přípravek). The term drug (léčivo) has gained the status of an umbrella term. The present paper lists the hitherto...

Contemporary Knowledge of Postantibiotic Effects of Antimicrobial Agents

Ľ. Majtánová, V. Majtán

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):255-260

The present authors review data from the literature concerning the postantibiotic effect (PAE) and the postantibiotic effect of subinhibitory concentrations (PA SME) of some antibiotics on clinically significant G- and G+ bacterial species. Attention is paid to the influence on their physiological characteristics with regard to virulence factors.

Effect of CdCl2 and CuSO4 on the Production of Flavonoids by the Culture of Ononis arvensis L. in vitro

L. Tůmová, R. Rusková

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):261-263

The effect of the abiotic elicitors CuSO4 and CdCl2 on the production of flavonoids in the callus culture of Ononis arvensis after 24; 48 and 168-hour administration was examined. The tested elicitors markedly influenced the production of flavonoids in this culture. A statistically significant increase in the production of flavonoids was recorded with the use of a CdCl2 solution in a concentration of 0.5 mg.l-1 and a concentration of 0.05 mg.l-1 after 48 hours of cultivation, in a concentration of 0.005 mg.l-1 after 24 and 48 hours of cultivation. In a CuSO4 solution in a concentration of 0.5 mg.l-1 it was after both 48 and 168 hours. The highest increase...

Brassica oleracea in vitro

J. Dušková, L. Jahodář, J. Dušek

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):264-267

A tissue culture was established. Highest increases in the fresh weight of cultures were achieved on the media with additions of IBA, NAA and IAA in a concentration of 10.0 mg.l-1. Differences in the values on the above-mentioned media were statistically insignificant. In callus extracts irrespective of the hormonal composition of the medium, saccharides (saccharose, fructose) and the terpenoid b-sitosterol were demonstrated. The content of amino acids was influenced by the hormonal composition of the medium. In comparison with the intact plant, there occurred differences in both qualitative and quantitative representation of amino acids. Biotransformational...

Constituents of Iresine herbstii

R. Kubínová, V. Suchý, M. Pízová, M. Machala

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):268-270

Ethanolic extracts from Iresine herbstii Hook. (Amaranthaceae) show antioxidant activity. In the study of its constituents responsible for this activity, waxes, b-sitosterol, campesterol and 3'4'7-trihydroxy-6-metoxyflavone which contributes to the antioxidant effect were isolated from the aerial part of the plant. The substances were identified by spectral methods.

A New Method of Detection of Plant Extracellular Proteolytic Enzymes

J. Stano, I. Šafařík, P. Kovács, K. Neubert, M. Šafaříková

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):271-272

By means of an insoluble chromogenic substrate (black gelasphere), a simple, sensitive and reproducible method of detection of extracellular proteolytic enzymes was worked out. Extracellular proteolytic enzymes (produced by a callus or suspension culture) hydrolyse black gelasphere. Colouring around the callus culture and under it is a sign of the activity of extracellular proteolytic enzymes produced by the callus culture. The intensity of colouring of the cultivating medium is a measure of the activity of extracellular proteolytic enzymes of the suspension culture.

Effect of Auxins on the Growth of the Callus Culture of Bellis perennis L. and the Production of Flavonoids

T. Siatka

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):273-275

The paper examines the effect of selected auxins (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, a-naphthylacetic acid, b-indolylaceticacid) in three concentrations (0.1; 1 and 10 mg/l) on the growth of the callus culture ofBellis perennis L. and the production of flavonoids. The best proliferation of the cultureand at the same time the highest content of flavonoids was achieved with2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mg/l, with b-indolylacetic acid in a concentration of 0.1 mg/l, and with a-naphthylacetic acid in a concentration of 1 mg/l.

Density of Lyophilised Ophthalmic Lamellae

Z. Zatloukal

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):276-278

The present paper examines the effect of the concentration of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC 4000) 20-60 g/l in hydrogel on the density of lyophilised xerogel. Lamellae of a diameter of 5.5 mm were obtained by stamping from lyophilised foils and their density was estimated. With decreasing HPMC 4000 concentration in hydrogel, the density of lamellae decreases to values within 50-55 g/l. The causes of this phenomenon and its consequences for optimisation of technology of lyophilised ophthalmic lamellae are discussed.

Formation of the Scientific Basis of Czech Pharmacy in 1939-1945

L. Nováček

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):279-283

The German occupation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1938-1945 and the worldwide war conflict which limited the import of drugs and medicines into the Czech Lands were a stimulus for the development of Czech pharmaceutical industry and research, which incorporated experts - lecturers and students from the closed Czech universities. Important roles in obtaining and disseminating scientific knowledge in pharmaceutical sciences were played by the Institute for Drug Research in Prague, Central Union of Pharmacists, and a number of pharmacies. In drug research, several new preparations were devised; the greatest achievement was the method of manufacture...

From Purkynje's Pharmacological Observations to Molecular Drug Interactions

J. Květina

Čes. slov. farm. 1998, 47(6):284-291

The 650th anniversary of the foundation of Charles University (7 April 1348) in Prague has initiated a number of historical surveys of the subjects which has been taught at the University for a longer period of time. The disciplines connected with pharmacotherapy were being developed in an empirical conception at the University from the second half of the 14 th century but the beginnings of experimental drug research date as late as the mid-19th century. The present survey of the history of "the sciences of medicaments" therefore attempts to outline in short entries the developmental stages of pharmaceutical and pharmacological investigations in the...
