Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(4):172-178
The paper discusses long-term trends in the utilization of antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy and reports an analysis of their concentrations at delivery. The request forms for routine therapeutic drug monitoring and concentrations of antiepileptic drugs at delivery collected between the years 1991-2006 were used as the data source. Monotherapy versus polytherapy, the utilization of individual antiepileptic drugs and combinations, and concentrations were monitored in a group of 235 pregnancies within three 5-year periods. Monotherapy was used in 61% in the years 1991-1995, in 68% in the years 1996-2000, and in 76% in the years 2001-2006. During the1st...

The aim of this experimental study was the preparation of once-daily-dosed matrix tablets containing the highly soluble drugs metoprolole succinate and metformine hydrochloride using Eudragit® NE 30 D as the matrix forming polymer. Matrix tablets were prepared by compression of coated granules. The formation of the secondary structure from the coating polymer was evaluated. In the case of metoprolole succinate, the drug release was prolonged, 53% of the drug being released within 20 hours. Dissolution profile was modified by addition of a filler, then the drug was completely released within 24 hours what is not acceptable for experimental purpose....

Antimicrobial substances produced by lactic acid bacteria
H. Kiňová Sepová, A. Bílková, F. Bilka, L. Bezáková
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(4):155-159
Lactic acid bacteria comprise several genera of Gram-positive bacteria that are known for the production of different antimicrobial substances. Lactic acid and related organic acids, usual metabolites of saccharide metabolism, inhibit the growth of other microbes mainly by lowering pH. Bacteriocins, proteinaceous antimicrobial substances, are produced ribosomally and those of lactic acid bacteria are well examined. Some species, for example Lactobacillus reuteri, are able to produce specific substances with miscellaneous structures. One of them, reutericyclin, a derivate of tetramic acid, is the first discovered antibiotic produced by a lactic acid...
Standard formulations for medicinal preparations in pharmacies IV. The usefulness of the collection Formularium Hospitale
J. Šubert, J. Kolář
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(4):160-162
Using the examples of the preparations from the collection Herstellungsvorschriften aus Krankenhausapotheken (Formularium hospitale), the paper demonstrates several possibilities of innovation and standardization of formulations of medicinal preparations dispensed in the pharmacies in the Czech Republic.
Drug controlled release from dosage forms coated with aqueous cellulose and acrylic polymer dispersions
D. Vetchý, H. Leštinová
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(4):163-171
Current scientific papers concerning aqueous cellulose and acrylic polymer dispersions for controlled drug delivery are focused on stability studies and the search for suitable coated formulations for drug release at a specific time and site of the gastrointestinal tract. It can be achieved especially by preparing polymer blends or using other additives. The permeability of the ethylcellulose membranes can be increased by the addition of water-soluble polymers (drug release modifiers). If there is no independence of solubility of the drug on pH, a poly(vinyl alcohol)-poly(ethylene glycol) graft copolymer is frequently used, because it simultaneously...
