doc. PharmDr. Jan Juřica, Ph.D., PharmDr. Miroslav Turjap, Ph.D.

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):8-13 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.003

Gastrointestinal adverse effects are common in patients with cancer and can be exacerbated by the disease itself. These adverse effects lead to decreased quality of life and may result in discontinuation of therapy and worsening of treatment outcomes. In extreme cases, adverse effects may even result in patient death. Oncology therapy has undergone significant changes in recent decades, introducing a range of new treatments. Unfortunately, these advancements have also brought about a previously unseen spectrum of adverse effects. The first separate part of this article was devoted to diarrhoea, constipation, mucositis and anorexia. This...

PharmDr. Marta Kučerová, Ph.D.

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):E11-E16 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.001

Covalent drugs are substances capable of forming a reversible or an irreversible covalent bond with a macromolecular target in the body. Despite the risk of adverse reactions in the organism, the design of such agents has become a trend over the last two decades. Drugs acting by covalent mechanisms from different indication groups are summarized in this article and possibly supported with a reference to the crystallographic structure in the Protein Data Bank. The advantages and the disadvantages of using covalent drugs are also discussed.

Possibilities of mixing powder mixtures for capsules using three-dimensional mixer devices in pharmacy practice

Ondřej Černý

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):16-22 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.004

Preparing oral powders for filling of hard capsules is one of the basic activities in pharmacies. One of the key operations that affects the resulting homogeneity of the substances in the mixture is the mixing process. Until recently, most pharmacies have used only a porcelain mortar and pestle for the mixing process, where the homogeneity of the resulting mixture is highly dependent on the experience and thoroughness of the preparing pharmacist or pharmacy assistant. In recent years, compact mixing devices that can be used in the pharmacy environment have become more widely employed. One of them is the FagronLab™ InvoMatic three-dimensional...

Lenka «upová, Tereza Hendrychová, Josef Malý

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):24-36 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.005

Acute cough is a frequent symptom accompanying upper respiratory tract infections and acute bronchitis. In order to start self-treatment, a thorough consideration of its suitability is necessary. A systematic algorithm can help pharmacists to do this, and its subconscious automation will help them reliably detect warning signs (red flags) of an acute illness or the inappropriateness of self-treatment in risk groups of patients. The presentation of the practical application of the cough self-treatment algorithm is therefore the main goal of this publication. Although a number of over-the-counter products are available for the symptomatic treatment of...

Zuzana Hająelová

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):37-42 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.006

With the rising prevalence of allergic diseases also rises a demand for safe and effective options for self-medication. The main aim of this article is focused on various types of self-medication using over-the counter preparations and distinguishing the warning signals. Over-the-countermedications contain antihistaminics for local or systemic application and glucocorticoids for local application. Self-medications suitable for short-term management of less severe accute symptoms of allergies.

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):43-49 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.007

Diarrhea is a common symptom that is suitable for self-treatment in a significant proportion of patients. The aim of this article was to summarize current knowledge and therapeutic options regarding the management of diarrhea in the context of self-treatment, with emphasis on the active role of the pharmacist or pharmaceutical assistant. To maximize the effect, the most appropriate therapeutic alternative should be recommended to the patient depending on the characteristics of the diarrhea and taking into account the patient's specificities and preferences, while focusing on the appropriate dosage, frequency and route of administration of the product....

Chronic venous disease - what to advice at the pharmacy?

Klára Kotyková

Čes. slov. farm. 2025, 74(1):51-57 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2025.008

In practice, it is quite common to encounter patients who come to the pharmacy because of problems associated with chronic venous disease. They complain, for example, of a feeling of heavy legs, tingling, pain or swelling of the lower limbs. Chronic venous disease is often underestimated, even though it can significantly reduce the quality of life and bring other complications. It is therefore important to start treatment as early as possible, as early-stage therapy tends to be more effective and cost-effective compared to more advanced conditions. Considering that the severity of symptoms does not always correlate with the degree of venous system...
