There exist about 750 species of Cordyceps at present. Ahigh price of natural Cordyceps and its lack in nature caused that the attention has been focused to its cultivation in laboratory conditions. The demand for this fungus-parasite is still quite high nowadays, as shown by the amount of commercial nutritional supplements. Phytochemical diversity has ensured that Cordyceps is used as an immunomodulatory and an antioxidant; it has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antibacterial, anti-HIV effects. In the present study we focused on NMR and IR analyses of natural substances isolated from two species of Cordyceps:...

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(5):175-181 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.025
Tablets are the most frequently employed dosage form. Their advantage lies in their availability, easy administration, good stability, and low price. The easiest technology to produce tablets is direct compression, even though the use of the method requires overcoming many obstacles, mainly related to content uniformity and variation of mass, disintegration, dissolution, and radial hardness of tablets. "Co-processed excipients", containing commonly processed blends of fillers, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, and other excipients are more and more widely used nowadays. These mixtures are manufactured by various technologies, chiefly by spray-drying,...
Metal complexes in medicine and pharmacy - the past and the present I
Ladislav Habala, Jindra Valentová
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(5):182-191 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.026
Metals and their compounds have been exploited in medicine since the dawn of history. All metals (or their substances) exert some kind of biological activity. Metal complexes exhibit a number of unique properties as compared to purely organic substances, stemming from the presence of the metal atom and the variable arrangement of ligands around this central atom. The goal of this brief survey is to provide basic overview of the area of metallopharmacy, aimed at specialists in pharmacy and chemistry as well as at the general educated public. The first part concentrates on some historical aspects of metallopharmacy and on current application of metals...

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(5):216-220 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.031
During some 150 years in the 17th and 18th centuries the network of convents with hospitals and pharmacies run by the Brothers Hospitallers was established in the Czech Lands. At that time the members of the Order made use of quite a large amount of early modern European health literature. Although the need of those books was closely connected with the main mission of the Order, their position in convents was marginal at the beginning and depended on the personality of individual friars. For a long time, the Czech Brothers Hospitallers were forced to use second-hand literature (even from the 16th century) which was...

Patient falls represent a significant burden on healthcare facilities, particularly by prolonging hospitalization and increasing the cost of subsequent healthcare. In most cases, fall is caused by a combination of several modifiable and unmodifiable risk factors. The pharmacotherapy, which is often unreasonably administered in relation to patient health condition and drug combination, belongs among the modifiable risk factors. In this case report, the potential effect of pharmacotherapy on the patient fall-related risk as well as clinical pharmacy service that can contribute to reducing the risk of falls by engaging of clinical pharmacist in a multidisciplinary...

Aleš Franc, Jan Muselík, David Vetchý
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(5):212-215 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.030
eer is for it's glycemic index and for alcohol content inappropriate drink for patients with diabetes mellitus. Traditional social habits, however, lead diabetics to drinking the beer and it has negative health effects in these patients. On the other hand, beer contains substances with a beneficial health effect, such as flavionoids, saponins, prebiotics, vitamin B complex and others. Also, for its isotonicity with blood and a suitable pH value the beer is appropriate for supplementation of liquids during physical activities. Therefore, the beer with reduced content of sugar and alcohol could be a desirable functional food not only for diabetics. While...
