Phenolic compounds in leaves insertions of Mentha × villosa Huds. cv. Snežná

Lamiaceae plants mostly accumulate active ingredients in their leaves. The subfamily Nepetoideae, including the genus Mentha L., is characterized by the presence of essential oil and antioxidant phenolics, chiefly hydroxycinnamic acids with predominance of rosmarinic acid, and flavonoids. Mentha × piperita and M. spicata are the most broadly used mints in both medicine and industry, while M. x villosa is less known in our country. Constituents of the leaves of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc.

The paper deals with the isolation and identification of the constituents of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. leaves. There was isolated β-sitosterol from petroleum ether extract, glucose and saccharose from methanolic extract and gallic acid, quercetin and quercetin-3-O-glucoside (isoquercitrin) from aqueous-methanolic extract. Isolates were identified by physico-chemical data, and by comparing with authentic samples and literature data. The compounds I - V were isolated from the leaves of Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. for the first time.

This overview paper describes in its introductory part bitter-tasting herbal drugs in the context of their traditional use in the loss of appetite and digestive disorders. Then, it mentions current knowledge on signals origin in bitter taste receptors leading to different, unexpected physiological processes. Newly observed biological effects of bitter tastants are correlated with modern trends of their complex study with an aim to develop new drugs primarily acting on bitter taste receptors.

Medicinal plants are advantageously used in the treatment of respiratory tract diseases. Upper respiratory tract catarrh is one of the diseases associated with seasonal weakening of immunity, and therefore, plant drugs with a non-specific immunomodulation effect are often used. Such plants include, but are not limited to, Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius).
