Characteristics of the buccal mucoadhesive films (film thickness, film weight, uniformity of mass and moisture content) prepared by solvent casting method were tested in this experimental study. The formulations consisted either of one mucoadhesive polymer (sodium hyaluronate of two different molecular weights and sodium carboxymethylcellulose) or combinations thereof. On the basis of the aforementioned tests, it was determined that water content was influenced by the molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate as well as by the ratio of mucoadhesive polymers in the composition. The composition of the films influences also other tested parameters.
Ageing and Alzheimer disease - system dynamics model prediction

Čes. slov. farm. 2016, 65(3):99-103 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2016.020
The aim of the paper is to describe asystem dynamics model applied on aprediction of the number of patients with Alzheimer's disease in the EU in the future and related financial impacts. Dementia resulting from Alzheimer's disease is the most widely spread type of dementia and is highly connected with the age of the person - the patient. Most people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease when they are older than 64. The ageing of population will be an ongoing problem in the next few decades due to alow birth rate and increasing life expectancy. This is areason to focus on prediction models of Alzheimer's disease and its impact on economy. The paper...
Preparation and evaluation of indomethacin loaded alginate microspheres

Indomethacin-loaded alginate microspheres were prepared by the ionic cross linking technique using calcium chloride. The effect of calcium chloride concentration was evaluated with respect to the size, entrapment efficiency and shape (sphericity) of the particles. The entrapment efficiency and in vitro release profiles were found to be altered by changing various formulation parameters. The desired indomethacin in vitro release profile (as per USP specifications for extended release formulations) was obtained from microspheres prepared from gel containing 2% of sodium alginate and 2% of methyl cellulose hardened in 3% calcium chloride...

Rhodiola rosea and its neuropsychotropic effects
Jan Juřica, Tereza Koupá
Čes. slov. farm. 2016, 65(3):87-93 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2016.018
The paper reviews the neuropsychotropic effects of Rhodiola rosea, a succulent perennial plant which is native to dry, high-altitude regions of the northern hemisphere. The most valued part of the plant is its rhizome, which has a rose-like fragrance. In the available literature, there is a large number of mentions of its healing properties; nonetheless, only few of them are based on reliable scientific evidence. Of the neuropsychotropic effects, there are mentions of anxiolytic, antidepressant, neuroprotective and procognitive properties and nonspecific "adaptogenic" effects. These effects are well established according to the preclinical studies;...
