Design and development of diltiazem hydrochloride transmucosal drug delivery system
Subhash Chandra Bose Penjuri, Saritha Damineni, Nagaraju Ravouru
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):19-27
Diltiazem hydrochloride is an antihypertensive agent which undergoes extensive first pass metabolism making it a possible candidate for buccal delivery. Diltiazem mucoadhesive buccal patches were prepared using HPMC, chitosan, PVP, PVA and carbopol. The physicochemical interactions between diltiazem and the polymers were investigated by FTIR and DSC, results revealed no interaction between drug and polymers. The patches were evaluated for various physicochemical parameters, in vitro release studies and ex vivo permeation through porcine buccal mucosa. Residual solvent content in patches was determined by gas chromatography and are largely...
Diclofenac sodium entrapment and release from halloysite nanotubules
Kateřina Krejčová, Patrick B. Deasy, Miloslava Rabišková
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):28-34
Halloysite was found to have interesting nanotubular geometry viable for the entrapment of various active agents. In this experiment, the ability of hollow halloysite cylinders to entrap the anionic model drug diclofenac sodium and to retard drug dissolution rate was investigated. Drugs could be incorporated into layered tubules via three different mechanisms: adsorption, intercalation and tubular entrapment. Based on the adsorption studies, some diclofenac sodium was shown to be adsorbed to the polyionic mineral surface despite its permanent negative charge. The X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRPD) results did not prove any intercalation reaction...
Pediatric oral solutions with propranolol hydrochloride for extemporaneous compounding: the formulation and stability study
Sylva Klovrzová, Lukáš Zahálka, Ludmila Matysová, Petr Horák, Zdenka Šklubalová
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):35-39
The aim of this study is to formulate an extemporaneous pediatric oral solution of propranolol hydrochloride (PRO) 2 mg/ml for the therapy of infantile haemangioma or hypertension in a target age group of 1 month to school children and to evaluate its stability. A citric acid solution and/or a citrate-phosphate buffer solution, respectively, were used as the vehicles to achieve pH value of about 3, optimal for the stability of PRO. In order to mask the bitter taste of PRO, simple syrup was used as the sweetener. All solutions were stored in tightly closed brown glass bottles at 5 ± 3 °C and/or 25 ± 3 °C, respectively. The validated HPLC...
Testing of the potentially probiotic lactobacilli for use in food supplements
Andrea Bilková, František Bilka, Hana Kiňová Sepová, Andrea Balažová
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):40-45
Some lactobacilli strains are used as probiotics in food industry and in dietary supplements. Eight lactobacilli strains, originated from the stomach of the lamb and goatling, are tested for their potential use in human and/or veterinary medicine in our department. Sanguinarine is a major alkaloid of Papaveraceae suspension cultures. For its antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-plaque and anti-inflammatory properties sanguinarine found application in dental preparations. A mixture of sanguinarine with other alkaloids is used for appetite stimulation of livestock. This paper is focused on testing of selected lactobacilli sensitivity to sanguinarine,...

Mucoadhesive films as perspective oral dosage form
Hana Landová, Zdeněk Daněk, Jan Gajdziok, David Vetchý, Jan Štembírek
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):4-11
Mucoadhesion is a specific phenomenon of creating bonds during intimate contact between biological surfaces covered by a mucus layer and a mucoadhesive material. In recent years come to the forefront of interest in the pharmaceutical industry modern dosage forms based on this specific process. Films (discs, patches) composed of mucoadhesive polymers (cellulose derivatives, polyacrylates, polyoxyethylene, etc.) prepared by established methods (solvent casting, hot melt extrusion, etc.) could be perspective candidates for oral administration of many drugs due to their flexibility and comfortable use. In addition, they can circumvent the relatively short...
Oral mucosa and therapy of recurrent aphthous stomatitis
Hana Landová, Zdeněk Daněk, Jan Gajdziok, David Vetchý, Jan Štembírek
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):12-18
Oral mucosa is one of the specific surfaces of the human body, which is permanently exposed to external factors related with food intake, breathing and speaking processes, which can lead to the onset of some problems. Disorders of the oral mucosa are a group of diseases, affecting, in the course of life, the majority of the population. Many of the oral mucosa ailments are manifested by lesions. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common of these diseases. Despite much clinical and research attention, its causes remain poorly understood and treatment is only symptomatic. RAS is reported to affect up to 25% of the population worldwide. Topical...

Organization and management of nationalized pharmaceutical industry in Slovakia from 1945 to 1948
Richard R. Senček
Čes. slov. farm. 2013, 62(1):46-50
The paper discusses a short but important period in the history of pharmaceutical industry with regard to Slovakia. The complicated post-war situation required peremptory interventions from the state, which attempted to secure the operation of strategic firms by means of National Administration Boards and nationalization. The firms which were nationalized by this measure were managed by the Ministry of Industry. They included also the pharmaceutical firms nationalized in Slovakia. The situation which produced contradictory responses in society and political scene culminated in the communist coup d'etat and nationalization of virtually all industries.
