Biotic elicitation of the L. suspension culture
M. Kašparová, T. Siatka, J. Dušek
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):107-110
The important substances of secondary metabolism include flavonoids and isoflavonoids. The Trifolium pratense L. (Fabaceae) suspension culture's yield of these metabolites is low, thus an attempt was made to increase the production by elicitation. The endogenous signal substances of the plants' defensive responses include jasmonic acid that also functions as a biotic elicitor in the case of exogenous application. In the experiment the authors monitored the impact of 4 different concentrations of jasmonic acid on the Trifolium pratense L. (variety DO-8 and variety DO-9) suspension culture's yield. The culture was cultivated in Gamborg medium to which...
Effects of Mg-ATP on the flavonoid production in the Scutellaria baicalensis Georgii suspension cultures

Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):111-114
This work focused on the cultivation of S. baicalensis Georgii in vitro cultures and on the possibilities of increasing the production of secondary metabolites in these cultures. The aim of the study was to determine whether the baicalin transport through vacuolar membrane is dependent on the presence of Mg-ATP. Our results showed that Mg-ATP had a significant effect on the ratio of baicalin and baicalein content and on the transport speed of these flavonoids. Therefore, the transport mechanism for baicalin are probably some of the MRP proteins which are the subfamily of the ABC transporters.
Synthesis of 2-{3-[4-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-piperazinyl]-2-hydroxy-propoxy}-phenylcarbamic acid alkylesters and in vitro evaluation of their ß-antiadrenergic and vasodilatative activities

Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):115-118
In effort to obtain effective compounds able to favourably influence pathologically changed cardiovascular functions, such as hypertension and ischemic cardiac disease, a new series of aryloxyaminopropanols were synthesized. Four of the compounds, which differ in the alkyl substitution of phenylcarbamate (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl), were chosen for basic in vitro pharmacological analyses. In experiments on the isolated spontaneously beating guinea pig atria all compounds at conc. of 1.0.10-6 mol.l-1 decreased the basic heart rate (7.6-13.6%) and inhibited the positive chronotropic effect of isoprenaline (pA2 = 6.28-6.81). The...
Studies on local anesthetics Part 183: Micellization and thermodynamic parameters of heptacainium chloride in the solution of potassium bromide
F. Andriamainty, J. Čižmárik, I. Malík, S. Horvat
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):119-125
The critical micellar concentration (CMC) of the local anaesthetic agent heptacainium chloride in the solution of KBr was determined by the spectrophotometric method in the UV region of the spectrum at the temperature range of t = 20-40 °C and pH ≈ 4.5-5.0. The dependence of CMC on the temperature T turned out forming the U-shape with the minimum at the temperature of t = 25 °C. The parabolic dependence of CMC on the temperature T was drawn by the fitting of the values using the polynomial function and the so-called power law equation. The CMC dependence on the temperature T was fitted by the second degree polynomial function. The obtained parabolic...

Medicinal preparations in Mattioli's Herbarium of 1596
P. Drábek
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):126-131
Herbaria in the 16th century very often included also the information concerning the use of medicinal plants in practice. The second Czech edition of Mattioli's Herbarium presented about 4000 pieces of therapeutic advice and instructions, including nearly 200 complete prescriptions for medicinal preparations. Preparations for internal use were mainly potions and concoctions. In preparations for external administration, the dosage was not of great importance and therefore less attention was paid to their precise composition. At that period, distillation was still widely used to prepare medicaments.

From Practice
On the content of the national part of the Czech Pharmacopoeia from the aspect of the formulation of medicinal preparations in pharmacies
J. Šubert
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(3):132-134
The national part of the Czech Pharmacopoeia 2005 and its Supplements 2006 and 2007 do not sufficiently solve the issues of standardization of the present formulation of medicinal preparations in pharmacies. The paper discusses some of the possible causes of this state and lists the examples of ophthalmic drops monographs which are no longer topical for formulation in pharmacies, and also some monographs with obsolete active ingredient concentrations or not fully solved formulation technology.
