Prospects of сomplex pharmaceutical composition application for pharmacological correction of metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a symptomatic complex characterized by insulin resistance, impaired prooxidant-antioxidantbalance of the body with the development of subchronic inflammation, and dyslipidemia. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of a complex pharmaceutical composition (CPC) (antioxidants and metabolitotropic agents), which is widely used in medical practice in Ukraine as a multivitamin complex, on experimental metabolic syndrome in rats. The effectof CPC on the correction of experimental MetS in rats, induced by a high content of carbohydrates and fats in the diet, was assessed. MetS in rats was characterized by a decrease in the sensitivity of cells to insulin, increased glucose content, and aviolation of its utilization, prooxidant-antioxidant disbalance. The results of the conducted studies indicate the positive effect of CPC, which contains ethyl esters of omega-3 acids, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, zinc, vitamin A, biotin, and selenium, on the sensitivity of cells to insulin, glucose utilization, duration of hyperglycemia and indicators of free radical oxidation processes and antioxidant defense systems in rats with experimental MetS. These results prove the feasibility of using CPC to correct metabolic syndrome.

Pulsed electric field energy calculation to damage red galangal (Alpinia purpurata, K. Scumm) rhizome slices and its essential oil yield and quality with hydrodistillation

This study aimed to determine the amount of energy to damage the red galangal rhizome sliced cell tissue and the amount and quality of the essential oil obtained by steam-water distillation. This study was a randomized block design, with pulsed electric field (PEF) voltage treatment starting at 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 V and without PEF and repeated three times. The results showed that the voltage between 3000 and 4000 V (E = 120-160 V/cm) or equivalent to 271.5-365.0 kJ/cm3 had damaged the red galangal rhizome slice cell tissue. The increase in yield due to PEF ranged from 13% to 73%, and there was no change in the value of the refractive index and specific gravity, but there was a change in the chemical composition of the essential oil constituents. The benefits of research with PEF treatment are the increase in yield and shorter distillation time.

The effect of Aronia melanocarpa extract on the phospholipid composition of the rat myocardium during stress

The research was performed on 80 male rats of the Wistar line. Animals of two age groups were used: adults (10-12 months) and old (22-25 months). The obtained data show that the development of immobilization stress in adult and aged rats are accompanied by the formation of a characteristic complex of changes in the phospholipid composition of the myocardium. Intraperitoneal injection of the chokeberry extract (Aronia melanocarpa) at a dose of 0.2 g/kg 60 minutes before the immobilization has limited stress modulation of myocardial phospholipid composition in aged animals. Thus, the extract of Aronia melanocarpa increases the myocardial resistance to the injury effect of stress.

Development and uniformity evaluation of low-dose medicated chewing gums prepared by compression method

The aim of this work was to develop medicated chewing gums (MCGs) containing 10 mg of lysozyme hydrochloride (LH) and 20 mg of ascorbic acid (AsA) obtained by the compression method with Health in Gum® (HiG®) PWD 01 as a compressible gum base. Because of a low content of active ingredients, it was essential to choose the way of adding them to the tableting mass and evaluate their distribution homogeneity in the dosage units. The blends for compression were prepared by two methods: the first one was simple mixing of all components; the second one included the step of wet granulation of a three-component mixture - LH, sucralose and a taste additive. Flow properties of LH, AsA, HiG®, LH granules and blends for compression were studied. MCGs were evaluated according to Ph.Eur. 9.0 Chapters 2.9.5, 2.9.6 and 2.9.40. AsA and HiG® were characterized as free flowing, while LH had insufficient flow properties. Compared with a simple mixed blend, the granulation step allowed significantly improving flow properties of the final blend for compression. Unlike MCGs compressed from the simple mixed blend, MCGs prepared through the granulation step met Ph.Eur. 9.0 Chapter 2.9.40 requirements. The propriety of MCG preparation method involving the step of wet granulation also has been confirmed by mass and drug content uniformity tests.

Microbiome in connection with metabolic syndrome and the therapeutic potential of its influencing

Several fields of medicine have been concerned with the role of the microbiome in maintaining the balance in the human body and its changes in the pathogenesis of diseases in recent years. The intestinal microbiome seems to play a key role in the regulation of metabolic pathways, inflammation and intestinal permeability. The aim of this review is to assess the importance of the intestinal microbiome in metabolic syndrome and the therapeutic or preventive potential of its manipulation.

Active substances from marine organisms in clinical trials and practice

Oceans cover a large part of our planet and they are a home for an enormous amount of species. A lot of them are still waiting to be discovered by man, much like the chemicals they synthesize. Marine pharmacology concerns itself with the study of these chemicals and their potential use in medicine. Origin in marine species is for the most part the only thing this large and diverse group of substances have in common, so the spectrum of possible applications is quite wide. Many of these substances have a unique mechanism of action, offering new therapeutic possibilities. Although just a few of them are used in a clinical practice today (e.g. eribulin, cytarabine), the future looks quite promising. Current clinical trials focus mostly on the therapy of cancer, but trials for therapy of pain or Alzheimer's disease and many others are also underway.

Mobile applications as good intervention tools for individuals with depression

At present mental disorders affect approximately 450 million people around the world. Depressive disorder is probably one of the most serious disorders and as a type of chronic disease, it represents a global threat and burdens economic and social systems of both individuals and governments worldwide. One of these most recent non-pharmacological approaches is also the so-called mHealth (mobile health), the use of mobile devices for the practice of medicine and public health, which proves to be effective particularly in the early stages of depression.
The purpose of this article is to explore the most recent randomized controlled trial studies which indicate efficacy of the use of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics or treatment of depression. The methods used in this study include a method of literature search of the studies focused on the impacts of individual applications for people with depression and on the specification of criteria evaluating quality of these applications.
The findings of the randomized controlled trials (RCT) show that there is a big potential of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics, and treatment of depression, particularly in mild and moderate stages of the disease. They seem to be especially relevant for self-monitoring of depressive symptoms in the early stages of depression.
There is an urgent need of more longitudinal RCT in this field in order to prove conclusive efficacy of these mobile applications in the treatment of depression. The authors list the main strengths and weaknesses of mobile applications in the detection, diagnostics, and treatment of depression.

Antimicrobial, antiparasitic and anticancer properties of Hibiscus sabdariffa (L.) and its phytochemicals: in vitro and in vivo studies

In the last few decades, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae; H. sabdariffa) has gained much attention in research field because of its potentially useful bioactivity as well as a great safety and tolerability. For decades, microbial, parasitic and cancer diseases remain a serious threat to human health and animals as well. To treat such diseases, a search for new sources such as plants that provide various bioactive compounds useful in the treatment of several physiological conditions is urgently needed, since most of the drugs currently used in the therapy have several undesirable side effects, toxicity, and drug resistance. In this paper, we aim to present an updated overview of in vitro and in vivo studies that show the significant therapeutic properties of the crude extracts and phytochemicals derived from H. sabdariffa as antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and anticancer agents. The future directions of the use of H. sabdariffa in clinical trials will be discussed.
