Zdeněk Monhart

Čes. slov. farm. 2024, 73(4):216-221 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2024.039

Heart failure is a severe and life-threatening condition with significant morbidity and mortality, a reduction in functional capacity and quality of life, and, importantly, heart failure is a substantial social and economic burden. The latest significant advances in therapy have established the recommended pharmacotherapy for patients with heart failure with reduced left ventricular systolic function with fourkey medication classes in each patient: renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (ACE inhibitors, sartans, or sacubitril/valsartan), SGLT2 inhibitors (gliflozins), beta-blockers, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, with diuretics...

Contamination of drugs with nitrosamines, a restored problem

Martin Doležal, Petr Kastner

Čes. slov. farm. 2024, 73(4):228-232 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2024.041

This review article deals with the issue of nitrosamines as impurities in pharmaceuticals. Medicinal products contaminated with nitrosamine raise legitimate concerns about the safety of medicinal use. Nitrosamines are known to be carcinogens and mutagens. This applies not only to valsartan and all tetrazole-containing angiotensin II receptor blockers, but also to ranitidine, nizatidine, pioglitazone, metformin, rifampicin, rifabutin, varenicline and other drugs, some of which have already been withdrawn from clinical practice. The detection of impurities above the limit in pharmaceutical substances then leads to interruptions in production and shortages...

Introduction and Aim: Due to the growing incidence of thromboembolic disease and atrial fibrillation, increasing trends in anticoagulants consumption can be expected. The aim of this study was to analyse the consumption of anticoagulants in the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia between 2007 and 2019. Methods: A retrospective analysis of anticoagulants comprising B01AA, B01AB, B01AE, B01AF and B01AX was performed using ATC/DDD methodology. Introduction and aim: Chronic obstructive lung diseases, including bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, among others, are characterized by inadequate adherence to inhalation technique. Evaluation of inhalation technique and subsequent repeated patient's education should be a routine part of therapy management. The aim of this article was to provide an overview of tools used to assess inhalation technique in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease based on a literature search and to analyse in more detail individual questionnaires/checklists specific for a group of inhalers or for a particular type of inhaler. Čes. slov. farm. 2024, 73(4):245-250 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2024.043

The article provides an overview of the pharmacotherapy of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in the context of evidence-based medicine. Lenka Ťupová, Tereza Hendrychová, Josef Malý

Čes. slov. farm. 2024, 73(4):252-260 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2024.044

Counsultancy in self-treatment of mild health problems is one of the dominant aspects of providing pharmaceutical care, especially in pharmacy practice. A sore throat is one of the most common reasons for visiting a pharmacy. According to current knowledge, the biggest pitfall of sore throat management is the systematic and reliable classification of patients into uncomplicated and potentially complicated cases, which should ideally take place at the level of pre-medical care, i.e. in a pharmacy. For this purpose, the practical use of the self-treatment algorithm in the therapy of sore throat was presented in the article. The introduction of a systematic...
