Collagen is the most abundant protein of the human body and a widely used biomaterial across sectors due to its favourable properties resulting from its physiological proximity. It plays a key role in the process of wound healing and tissue repair and is therefore used in modern wound dressings in various forms, either alone or in combination with other materials. Collagen films also offer potential applications for these purposes, because collagen has good film-forming properties and is commonly used in the food industry. The collagen films themselves, without further treatment, have weak mechanical properties, which is unsatisfactory when applied...

Lipid profile and risks of cardiovascular diseases in conditions of rheumatoid arthritis
Ľudmila Pašková
Čes. slov. farm. 2019, 68(6):219-228 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2019.027
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) belong to the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Elevated levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol are associated with increased incidence of CVD in the population. Reversely, reduction of lipoprotein levels in plasma results in a positive impact on CVD prevention. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic inflammatory disease, have markedly increased mortality risk due to CVD, despite lower lipoprotein levels in comparison with common population. This is known as the "lipid paradox". RA itself represents an independent CVD risk factor acting as an inflammatory component. Inflammation, manifested by...

Henisch's translation of pharmaceutical works
František Šimon
Čes. slov. farm. 2019, 68(6):237-242 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2019.029
Bardejov-born Georg Henisch (1549-1618) translated four pharmaceutical texts from Latin into German, three works by the French author A. Mizauld and one by Sextus Placitus, an author of the late Classical Period. The Latin texts had been published several times before Henisch translated them, but his translation enables us to identify the original which he used. Henisch's German versions were also issued several times in the identical form during his lifetime. All of them were published in quick succession in the years 1574-1575. Apart from these translations, Henisch also produced other works in that period, despite being just 25 years old in 1574...
Pharmacists among Members of the Czech-Moravian Capuchin Province
Karel Nesměrák
Čes. slov. farm. 2019, 68(6):243-262 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2019.030
Based on a profound examination and evaluation of archival materials, the paper reconstructs the lives of eighteen pharmacists - members of the Czech-Moravian Capuchin Province from the 17th to the 19th century, of which sixteen served as monastic pharmacists. In addition to the identified biographical data (based on archival materials), the Latin summary reports on the life of a particular capuchin on the occasion of his death (the so-called elogia) from the Capuchin Provincial Chronicle (Annales capucinorum) are edited, together with their commented Czech translation. The discovered data allow a deeper insight into the pharmaceutical history...
