On the content of the National part of the Czech Pharmacopoeia 2017
Jan Šubert, Jozef Kolář
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):81-84 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.011
This paper deals with the content of the national part of the Czech Pharmacopoeia (CP) 2017 in terms of preparation of pharmaceuticals in pharmacies, quantitative methods for controlling their quality and their usable life. Despite the longer time span of the CP 2017 since the CP 2009, compared to the CP 2009 from the CP 2005, the content of the CP 2017 can not be evaluated as a more pronounced shift from the national part of the CP 2009. Some issues of the national section of the CP 2017 are discussed in detail in the paper.

Melatonin as a structural template in the development of novel drugs for neurodegenerative disorders
Jan Korábečný
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):51-58 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.007
Melatonin is a key regulatory hormone produced mainly in the pineal gland. In the recent years, melatonin contribution to neurodegenerative disorders has dramatically increased when inspecting its favorable pharmacological profile. Its levels were found to be decreased during aging. Data from clinical studies point out to its positive outcome not only in improving the quality of sleep but it also exerts anti-inflammatory and antioxidant profile. Moreover, it was found as an effective neuroprotective agent. Current study summarizes the experimental data from basic research of medicinal chemistry field devoted to melatonin. Particular emphasis is directed...
Superdisintegrants used in pharmaceutical technology
Jan Gajdziok
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):59-65 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.008
Disintegrants are substances which promote disintegration of the solid dosage form in the dissolution medium or body fluids. Efficient disintegration is an important prerequisite for ensuring release of the active substance and its good bioavailability. Several mechanisms of disintegrants' action are currently recognized, but disintegration is a complex process, and the majority of substances act by combining multiple mechanisms. Superdisintegrants as an innovative materials allow more efficient disintegration of the dosage form in lower concentrations, without any negative impact on processability and mechanical properties of the final dosage form....
Selenium in the prevention and subsidiary therapy of cancer of soft tissues
Andrea Raganová, Andrea Gažová, Igor Tomo, Viera Kristová
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):66-70 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.009
Selenium as an antioxidant has attracted attention because of its anticancer activity. This review presents a view on selenium and its compounds exerting influence against cancer in the soft tissues. The results reveal a significant strong association between a low selenium level in blood and a cancer risk. Seleno-supplementation is important in the prevention of metastatic cancer. These results help to elucidate the anticancer effect of selenium providing further evidence to exploit novel anticancer agents targeting selenium-containing organic compounds.
Microbiome in connection with metabolic syndrome and the therapeutic potential of its influencing
Miriam Tutková, Jana Rudá-Kučerová
Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):71-80 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.010
Several fields of medicine have been concerned with the role of the microbiome in maintaining the balance in the human body and its changes in the pathogenesis of diseases in recent years. The intestinal microbiome seems to play a key role in the regulation of metabolic pathways, inflammation and intestinal permeability. The aim of this review is to assess the importance of the intestinal microbiome in metabolic syndrome and the therapeutic or preventive potential of its manipulation.

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(2):85-90 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.012
Georg Henisch (1549-1618), a native of Bardejov, for all of his life as a teacher at St. Anne's Grammar School in Augsburg, Germany. He was a very prolific polyhistor, publishing spiritual and occasional poetry, works on medicine, mathematics, rhetoric, dialectics, astronomy, linguistics and geography, editions of some ancient authors, and several translations. In 1573 he issued the pharmaceutical guide Enchiridion medicinae, which presents medications and remedies for individual health problems without any further comment on their effects and usage. However, this guide had a precursor, published in Paris in 1571, but with no mention of the...
