The effect of the size of a conical hopper aperture on the parameters of the flow equation of sorbitol and its size fractions

Zdenka Šklubalová, Hana Hurychová

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):14-18 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.003

Determination of the rate of gravitational flow through a hopper aperture is one of the most widely used methods for the evaluation of flowability properties of pharmaceutical materials. This work studies the influence of the diameter of a conical hopper aperture in the range of 0.6-1.5 cm on the mass flow rate Q (g/s) of the pharmaceutical excipient, sorbitol, for direct compression (Merisorb 200, MS 200) and its size fractions in the range of 0.080-0.400 mm in order to recommend the appropriate aperture size for testing. Non-linear dependence of the flow rate on the aperture diameter is modeled by the Jones-Pilpel power equation. Using...

Synthesis and anti-infective evaluation of 5-amino-N-phenylpyrazine-2-carboxamides

Jan Zitko, Fernando Franco, Pavla Paterová

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):19-24 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.004

A series of eleven novel 5-amino-N-phenylpyrazine-2-carboxamides were synthesized and evaluated for in vitro anti-infective properties. Prepared compounds were characterized by IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra, elementary analysis and melting points. Lipophilicity parameters Log P and ClogP were calculated. None of the compounds was effective against any of tested mycobacterial strains (Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, M. kansasii, M. avium) up to concentration of 100 μg/mL. 5-amino-N-(2,5-dimethylphenyl) pyrazine-2-carboxamide ( 3) exerted moderate antibacterial...

Alzheimer's disease: cost cuts call for novel drugs development and national strategy

Petra Marešová, Blanka Klímová, Kamil Kuča

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):25-30 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.005

Mental health affects the quality of life for a large number of individuals and family members. Currently, globally costs for people with dementia amount to more than 1% of gross domestic product (GDP). In the future, the growth of expenditure is expected with regard to the fact that the population of developed countries is aging and the dementia is closely associated with increasing age. It is evident that governments have to allocate adequate financial, material and human resources to address a health problem on this scale. The purpose of this article is to explore the current state of treatment and care of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease...

Use of selected OTC drugs: comparing Greece and the Czech Republic

Božena Macešková, Eleni Pipinou

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):31-34 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.006

The use of OTC (over-the-counter) drugs containing Ibuprofen and Paracetamol in solid peroral dosage forms was researched. The questionnaire was distributed in 6 pharmacies in Athens, pharmacists interviewed the patients and recorded the answers from June to August 2014. Data from 50 patients for each substance were gathered and analyzed. The most of purchasers of Paracetamol bought it repeatedly (70.00% of respondents); Ibuprofen was preferred to be used in treating headache (81.82% of repeated users, 35.29% of the first time users), and both of the researched drugs were used with almost equal frequency in treating toothache and muscle and joint pain....

Effectiveness of phytotherapy in supportive treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus Billberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

David Koupý, Hana Kotolová, Jana Kučerová

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):3-6 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.001

The billberry is well-known for its tasty blue-dyeing fruits. Historically the leaves and fruits were used to treat diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dementia and cancer. Antidiabetic properties of the plant are attributed mostly to the content of anthocyanins and polyphenols. These compounds have proven their antidiabetic potential in various studies. Their mechanism of action is an increase in insulin secretion (anthocyanin pelargonidin), reduction of insulin resistance (anthocyanin cyanidin-3-glucoside), glucose resorption from the GIT (polyphenols) and enhancement of beta-cells regeneration. Besides these effects, anthocyanins contribute to the...

Bioavailability and factors influencing its rate

Barbora Vraníková, Jan Gajdziok

Čes. slov. farm. 2015, 64(1):7-13 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2015.002

Bioavailability can be defined as the rate and range of active ingredient absorption, when it becomes available in the systemic circulation or at the desired site of drug action, respectively. Drug bioavailability after oral administration is affected by anumber of different factors, including physicochemical properties of the drug, physiological aspects, the type of dosage form, food intake, biorhythms, and intra- and interindividual variability of the human population. This article is the first from the series dealing with the bioavailability and methods leading to its improvement. The aim of the present paper is to provide an overview of aspects...
