Effects of zinc and cadmium ions on cell growth and production of coumarins in cell suspension cultures of Angelica archangelica L.

Tomáš Siatka, Marie Kašparová, Jiřina Spilková

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):261-266

The plant cell may respond to the excess of heavy metals in its environment by various mechanisms, including enhanced biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. In this study, zinc (0 to 1500 μM) and cadmium ions (0 to 100 μM) were tested as potential elicitors of the production of coumarins in angelica cell suspension cultures. In addition, the toxicity of both metals was assessed by evaluating their effect on cell growth (characterized by fresh and dry biomass at the end of a two-week subculture). It has been found that fresh biomass was not influenced up to zinc concentrations of 150 and 300 μM in the dark-grown and light-grown cultures, resp....

Comparison of sanguinarine production in suspension cultures of the Papaveraceae plants

František Bilka, Andrea Balažová, Andrea Bilková, Ivana Holková

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):267-270

Intact plants of the Papaveraceae family are producers of a whole range of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which are used in pharmaceutical industry. In vitro cultures derived from plants of the Papaveraceae do not have the ability to produce such a broad spectrum of alkaloids, only the biosynthetic pathway leading to sanguinarine is active. This study deals with the preparation of in vitro cultures of Papaver somniferum, Eschscholtzia californica, Chelidonium majus and Macleaya cordata. Their sanguinarine production abilities were tested and compared. The lowest amounts of sanguinarine from all cultures tested...

Evaluation of content uniformity of tablets with a low content of the active ingredient with a narrow therapeutic index

Jan Muselík, Aleš Franc

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):271-275

A short time ago there was a discussion about the use of NTI drugs such as warfarin. In the treatment by generic drugs some medical complications and deaths due to occult bleeding were retrospectively monitored. As a result of these observations, the generic substitutions with tablets containing warfarin were banned in the U.S. as there was a belief that generics have different pharmacokinetics. But a subsequent research found that different plasma levels are not due to generic drugs, but they are caused by different individual responses of the organism and especially by not uniform contents of warfarin in individual tablets. The different contents...

Analysis of pharmaceutical care in dispensing of over-the-counter orlistat

Katarína Dobrucká, Josef Malý, Jiří Vlček

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):276-281

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by its high prevalence. Easy availability of pharmaceutical care allows pharmacies to be the first place of capture or intervention for patients who are overweight or obese. The aim of the study was to analyse the role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in securing the safety of self-medication with orlistat. In this prospective observational study, the patients were the people who came to the IKEM Hospital Pharmacy for self-medication with orlistat over a period of May through December 2009. The data were collected by trained pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in interviews with patients when dispensing...

Halloysite - interesting nanotubular carrier for drugs

Miloslava Rabišková

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):255-260

Halloysite is a naturally occurring mineral similar to kaolin, possessing a special particle shape in the form of ultramicroscopic multi-layered hollow cylinders. It is utilizable in many industrial branches and due to its advantages, e.g. biocompatibility, drug entrapment, high mechanical strength and easy natural availability also on the pharmaceutical field and in medicine. It can bind drugs on the surface or inside of tubules and increase drug stability or change its release. Surface of the tubules can be readily modified for the application in drug delivery systems. Halloysite was reported as promising material for bone implants and controlled...

Phenyl salicylates - a new group of potential antituberculotics

Karel Waisser, Eva Novotná, Jiří Kuneš, Jiřina Solaříková

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):282-284

Antimycobacterial activity of phenyl salicylates (salols) was studied in connection with antituberculotic activity of salicylic derivatives. Phenyl salicylates are esters. Our attention was previously oriented on amides. Phenyl salicylates (salols) represent a new group of antimycobacterial compounds. They are less active than the corresponding amides. The most active compound in the group under study is substituted on phenyl in the salicyl moiety with a 4-methoxy group. The study reports a new item of information about antimycobacterial salicylic derivatives.

Study of local anaesthetics - Part 200. Choice of the optimal type of chitosan for the formulation of local anaesthetics of the carbamate type into hydrogels

Jozef Čižmárik, Zuzana Vitková, Petra Herdová

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(6):285-287

The aim of this examination was a study of hydrogels on the base of various types of the natural polymer chitosan with an assay of local anaesthetics of the carbamate type. The concentration of the gel-creating compound in hydrogels was 2.5%. The study included heptacainiumchloride (HEP), pentacainiumchloride (PEN) and carbisocainiumchloride (CAR). Evaluation was focused on the flow properties of prepared gels and the liberation of drugs from them. Based on the achieved results, the optimal type of biopolymer was determined: PEN - CHIT B, for CAR - CHIT C, while in the case of HEP it was found that chitosan is not suitable as a gel-creating base.
