A study of a co-processed dry binder composed of microcrystalline cellulose and glycerol monostearate

Jitka Mužíková, Sandra Muchová

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(5):229-233

The paper studies the co-processed dry binder LubriToseTM MCC from the viewpoint of energy evaluation of the compression process, strength and disintegration time of tablets. The results were compared with the identical evaluation of physical mixtures of microcrystalline cellulose with several types of lubricants. LubriTose MCC showed the lowest value of energy for friction, the highest value of energy accumulated by the tablet, and the highest plasticity of all tableting materials under study. There were no marked differences in the values of the energy of decompression. The tensile strength of tablets from LubriTose MCC was lower than...

Methods of pharmaceutical technology in preparation of pellets for detection of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors

David Vetchý, Hana Leštinová, Ivana Tušarová

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(5):234-239

A variety of methods and technical equipment are currently available for checking of air contaminants. Generally, all known and sophisticated methods are based on sampling of substances in the air using different collectors or their capture in a suitable medium. However, new detection methods particularly useful in outdoor conditions are still looking for. Detection systems must be transportable, fast acting, inexpensive, sensitive and selective, and their operation should not be complicated. Such an appropriate system for the detection of carbamates and highly toxic organophosphates is detection tubes with microcrystalline cellulose pellets containing...

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(5):210-221

Cholinesterase inhibitors have beneficial effects on the cognitive, functional, and behavioural symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Up to date, they represent almost the only drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration agency for AD treatment. The group involves donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine. Apart from the above mentioned cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine is used for AD treatment as well acting as N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) non-competitive antagonist. Tacrine (9-amino-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridine) was the first cholinesterase inhibitor approved for symptomatic AD treatment. However, its several side effects (hepatotoxicity...

Important toxic and undesirable effects of medicaments in animals from the pharmacist's viewpoint

Zuzana Široká

Čes. slov. farm. 2012, 61(5):222-228

Both veterinary and human drugs belong to the most common sources of poisoning in companion animals. The most problematic are "over the counter" drugs, mainly those from the group of analgesics, which are often given to animals by their owners who are not informed about their toxicity to animals, and those from the group of antiparasitics, which are often administered in an improper dose and to improper animal species. Pharmacists should play an important role in the education of their clients and animal owners in this field. To be able to give qualified advice and thus decrease the possibility of animal poisoning by drugs, they need to obtain sufficient...
