Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):237-240
This paper is focused on the evaluation of the effect of three different elicitors on sanguinarine production in suspension cultures derived from a low-morphine variety of the opium poppy. The elicitors CdCl2, methyl jasmonate and a homogenate from the phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea have been administered into the growth media of 11-day-old suspension cultures. Their effect on the production of sanguinarine was monitored after 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure. The highest sanguinarine production was observed after 48 h of exposure to the biotic elicitor Botrytis cinerea, which increased the sanguinarine production 5.3-times....
Viscosity and consistence measurements following Ph.B. 2009
Eva Šnejdrová, Petra Pohlová
Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):241-246
A good knowledge of rheological properties is important for quality and stability assessment of medicines, making-up, and the study of drug release or the choice of a suitable homogenizer. Viscosity is the most often measured quantity. Apparent viscosity of chosen polymeric excipients used in pharmacy particularly as thickeners, stabilizing agents and drug carriers was measured (Methylcellulosum, Hypromellosum, Cellacefatum, Xanthani gummi, Carbomera) and also consistency of semisolids (Vaselinum album, Vaselinum flavum, Adeps lanae, Alcoholum adipis lanae unguentum, Alcoholum adipis lanae cremor, Acoholis cetylici unguentum, Alcoholis ceylici cremor)....

Clinical significance of cytochrome P450 genetic polymorphism - part III. cytochrome P450 2C19
Jana Ďuricová, Milan Grundmann
Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):211-218
Cytochrome P450 2C19 is the important cause for great differences in the pharmacokinetics of a number of clinically used drugs. Several studies have demonstrated that the CYP2C19 polymorphism is important for several drugs and may be associated with the occurrence of clinically relevant side effects. The third part of this paper focuses on the influence of genetic polymorphism of cytochrome P450 2C19 on drug effect.
Alzheimer's disease: aspects of contemporary pharmacological treatment
Lucie Drtinová, Miroslav Pohanka
Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):219-228
Neurodegenerative disorders are highly spread all over the world. It is estimated that 23.5 million people worldwide are suffering from neurodegeneration, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequently occurring one. Owing to the increasing life expectancy, the number of patients is supposed to be increased in the next decades. The disease is atrophic-degenerative disorders affecting the brain. Although the etiology of AD is unknown, several interrelated causes are being considered: the loss of the cholinergic system, an amyloid plaque and an amyloid precursor, tau protein, excitotoxicity and other risk factors. The symptomatic manifestations...

Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):229-236
The family Anacardiaceae Lindl. (cashew family, sumac family) is one of the nine families of the order Sapindales Dumortier. It consists of about 600 species classified in 70 genera. Members of the family are shrubs, trees and lianas with pantropical distribution; however, a few species occur in the North Temperate Zone. Some species are used for the production of fruit (mango, mombin), some species are cultivated for edible seeds (pistachio, cashew nuts). Many species are of toxicological importance, especially members of the genus Toxicodendron P. Mill., other species are widely used in folk medicines. This review introduces...

Medicinal preparations in this country at the end of the 18th century. Part I - Introduction and liquid dosage forms
Pavel Drábek
Čes. slov. farm. 2011, 60(5):247-254
The paper deals with the development underwent by the Pharmacopoea Austriaco-provincialis, valid in the Czech Lands. Between 1774 and 1794 there were altogether eight issues of this Pharmacopoeia. Its authors based it on the text of the Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Viennense, published in 1770. They selected the preparations which they considered to be most important. The compositions of the adopted preparations were mostly substantially simplified. Most changes were included in the last edition of 1794. Besides the Pharmacopoeia, the present paper discusses the contents of the contemporary pharmaceutical price lists of midecaments,...
