Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(5):199-204
Depression represents one of the most severe health problems. It belongs to the diseases which cause the largest amount of non-fatal disease burden worldwide, and greatly influences the quality of life. The frequency of this disease is connected with the consumption of antidepressants. This study thus aimed to overview the trends of antidepressants consumption in Lithuania, to assess the number of depression cases, when diagnosed for the first time and repeatedly with regard to demographic situation, and to evaluate the impact of this disease on women and the society. All prescribed antidepressants were divided into four groups, according to the ATC...

Artificial neural networks (ANN) were utilized to predict the HPLC retention factor k of a group of basic esters of alkoxyphenyl-substituted phenylcarbamic acid. Very good results were obtained in the prediction of three investigated systems: phenyl column, acetonitrile/water mobile phase (retention factor kPhAc), phenyl column, methanol/water mobile phase (retention factor kPhMe), and C18 column, acetonitrile/water mobile phase (retention factor kC18Ac), which are expressed by the dependences of the retention factor predicted vs. the retention factor experimentally measured. The intercepts and the slopes of the obtained dependences were close to 0...

The aim of the experimental paper was to evaluate the achieved retardation of prepared modified release formulations containing tramadol hydrochloride as an active ingredient by comparison of the dissolution profiles and to study the dissolution mechanism using mathematical models. The release of the active ingredient from the matrix tablet and multiple unit dosage form containing the coated microspheres was compared with the marketed once daily dosed modified release dosage forms of tramadol hydrochloride. The measured data were compared with the published pharmacokinetic data of available once daily formulations. Based on the evaluation of in vitro...
Constituents of Philadelphus coronarius L.
D. Grančai, V. Vaľko, E. Švajdlenka
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(5):219-221
The paper deals with the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from Mock Orange leaves (Philadelphus coronarius L.). A methanolic extract was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. Two flavonoids, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (rutin), were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction. The substances were identified by spectral methods, comparing results with the standards and literature.
Comparison of metoprolol/α-hydroxymetoprolol metabolic ratio after a single dose and in steady state
J. Ďuricová, I. Peřinová, I. Kacířová, M. Grundmann
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(5):222-226
Metoprolol/α-hydroxymetoprolol metabolic ratio (MR) 3 hours after a single metoprolol dose is used for cytochrome P450 2D6 phenotyping. The aim was to compare cytochrome P450 2D6 metabolic activity after the first metoprolol dose and in steady state. Thirteen adult hypertensive patients (7 females) in whom an introduction of the beta-blocker metoprolol was indicated were included. Age (mean ± SD) was 42.8 ± 12.9 years, weight (mean ± SD) was 94.0 ± 25.4 kg. Metoprolol dose was chosen based on clinical grounds on the day of metoprolol first ingestion. Blood samples were drawn after the first dose and at least 2 weeks...

Medicinal preparations in the Renovated Prague Dispensatory of 1750. Part I - Introduction and the first nine classes of dosage forms
P. Drábek
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(5):227-233
The article deals with the development of pharmacotherapy in Bohemia in the late Baroque period. It draws attention to newly introduced preparations and some surviving classic prescriptions. It is based on the second edition of the Renovated Prague Dispensatory (Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Pragense renovatum, 1650). It compares its content with the Viennese Dispensatory (Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Austriaco-Viennense, 1651) and it takes into account also the previous sources, e.g. Prague Pharmacy Rate (1737) and the first edition of the Prague Dispensatory (1739). It draws attention to various peculiarities of the period prescription and some...
Medicinal preparations in the Restored Prague Dispensatory of 1750. Part II - The examination of the remaining dosage forms
P. Drábek
Čes. slov. farm. 2010, 59(5):234-240
The article links up with the first communication, which examines vinegars, distilled waters, balms, sugar-containing preparations, decoctions, confections, elixirs, tinctures, cerates, and cataplasms. This part includes the discussion, conclusions and list of the literature.
