Hypolipidemic effect of amaranth constituents

Z. Chmelík, V. Závalová, P. Suchý, H. Kotolová, P. Kollár

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):200-202

More than 60 plant species of the genus Amaranthus spreading from the tropical to moderate zone have been classified. For a number of years, the amaranth (Amaranthus sp.) has been considered to be a crop-plant with a high nutritional index. Thanks to this property it has become an important component of food not only for people but also a suitable component of fodder mixtures for farm animals. Potential biological effects of the amaranth which could be employed therapeutically in the prevention or therapy of metabolic disorders have been studied in a number of preclinical studies. The papers have focused on the nutritional value of amaranth products,...

Antimycobacterial activity of novel derivatives of arylcarbonyloxyaminopropanols

S. Kečkéšová, E. Sedlárová, J. Čižmárik, V. Garaj, J. Csöllei, P. Mokrý, F. Andriamainty, I. Malík, J. Kaustová

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):203-207

The study examined the antimicrobial activity of 2-hydroxy-3-[4-(2-fluoro, 4-fluoro, and 2-metoxyphenyl)-piperazin-1-yl]-propyl-4-[(alkoxycarbonyl)amino] benzoates, their salts with hydrochloric acid, with one to four carbon atoms in the alkoxy group of the carbamoyl group studied and described. The series of these substances were evaluated in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium kansasii and against clinically isolated strains of Mycobacterium kansasii 6 509/96. The correlation of this activity with lipophilicity (log k') was used to describe the structure-antimycobacterial activity relationships (QSARs). The...

Comparison of renal accumulation of [DOTA0, 1-Nal3]-octreotide labelled with selected radiometals

Z. Nový, J. Mandíková, F. Trejtnar, A. Lázníčková

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):208-211

Radiolabelled somatostatin receptor-specific peptides are a useful tool in the diagnosis and/or radiotherapy of somatostatin-positive neuroendocrine tumours. However, significant renal uptake of the radiopeptides may result in radiotoxicological injure of the kidney. The aim of the study was to analyze the undesirable renal accumulation of a newly developed somatostatin receptor-specific peptide, [DOTA0, 1-Nal3]-octreotide (DOTA-NOC), labelled with 177Lu, 111In or 90Y. To quantify the accumulation rate of the radiopeptides, the renal uptake of 177Lu-DOTA-NOC, 111In-DOTA-NOC...

Adhesivity of branched plasticized oligoesters

E. Šnejdrová, M. Dittrich

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):212-215

This paper compares the rheological and adhesive properties of branched oligoester carriers plasticized with the use of various types and concentrations of plasticizers. The oligoesters tested and reported here are star-like branched terpolymers of dipentaeythritol, D,L-lactic acid and glycolic acids, where dipentaerythritol (D) was employed as the branching agent in three concentrations (3%, 5% or 8%) in synthesis by step-by-step polycondenzation. Carriers labelled as 3D, 5D and 8D were plasticized with either triethyl citrate (TEC), or methyl salicylate (MS), or ethyl salicylate (ES) in various concentrations. Dynamic viscosity of plasticized oligoesters...

Influence of formulation technology on theophylline release from chitosan-based pellets

K. Dvořáčková, G. Škrabáková, M. Rabišková

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):216-224

Pellets containing theophylline, microcrystalline cellulose and chitosan were prepared by wetting with chitosan solution (1-5%) in 10% acetic acid using the extrusion/ spheronization method. The influence of chitosan content (0.98-4.47 %) on theophylline release from pellets was studied and their dissolution profiles were compared with the results obtained in pellets without chitosan and pellets containing 25% of chitosan prepared by wetting with acetic acid. A slower theophylline release (up to 5 hrs) at pH 6.8 from pellets prepared with chitosan solution was found; it was caused probably by the interaction of the carbonyl groups of MCC and the amino...

Monitoring of surface cytotoxic drugs in the environment of hospital pharmacies in the Czech Republic

P. Odráška, L. Gorná, L. Doležalová, M. Oravec, J. Kuta, L. Bláha

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):225-229

The study aimed to determine the contamination with antineoplastic (cytotoxic) drugs in 15 hospital pharmacies in the Czech Republic and to investigate the relationship between the level of contamination and the work load (number of preparations per week reported by the given pharmacy staff). For this purpose, surface contamination of the most exposed locations within the preparation and storage areas was monitored. Monitored surfaces were wiped with a nonwoven swab moistened with acetate buffer (0.02 M, pH = 4). Wipers were then extracted in the same solution and analysed for cyclophosphamide and platinum contents by high-performance liquid chromatography...

Methods of preparation of microparticles in pharmaceutical technology

M. Bajerová, K. Dvořáčková, J. Gajdziok, R. Masteiková, M. Rabišková

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):191-199

The review paper particularly focuses on the methods of preparation and characterization of microparticles as well as the characterization and examples of their possible use in pharmacotherapy. Microparticles as a multiple dosage form usually rank among the medicaments of the second generation, i.e. the medicaments in which controlled release is possible. In comparison with the classic dosage forms they exert lower undesirable effects and higher stability. Administration of medicaments in this dosage form produces higher efficiency of therapy and simultaneously improved compliance of the patient. The most widely used methods of preparation of microparticles...

Contributions to the development of advertising in pharmacy I

V. Vranová, V. Rusek

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):230-236

Advertising has been a part of the trade since its very beginning. An expansion of advertising began after the invention of book printing and the birth of newspapers, which made advertising effective. Advertising was also used by physicians, healers, pharmacists, herbalists, and quacks. Advertising activities were targeted not only at patients but also at (general) practitioners and pharmacists. Many types of advertising have been used, for instance mass advertising (press, visual, audio), direct advertising (sales representatives, friendly business relations, and personal letters), and goodwill (sponsoring, charity).

A contribution to the histories of the pharmacies of the Brethren of Mercy in the territory of contemporary Slovakia in the first decades of the 20th century

T. Ambrus

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):237-240

Based on archival documents, the paper presents new knowledge of the histories of the pharmacies run by the Brethren of Mercy in the territory of Slovakia. Members of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God - Brethren of Mercy were active in Spišské Podhradí, Bratislava and Skalica. In these places, beside the convent, they ran a hospital and a pharmacy. The paper points out to the influence of the events of world and regional history, particularly the First World War, the life of the Order and health-service activities in the individual convents.

Examination of selected quality parameters of the parenteral nutrition AIO - a pilot study

M. Janů, M. Vecko, R. Masteiková

Čes. slov. farm. 2009, 58(5):241-244

Preparation of the parenteral nutrition AIO is one of the basic operations in the pharmacies of the higher type. In these parenteral preparations it is primarily necessary to continuously monitor a number of quality parameters so that they may comply with the valid normative requirements and give the maximal benefit to the patient. These multi-component systems include even more than 50 components, which may undergo many chemical and physical changes in the longitudinal axis (phosphate compounds, vitamins, catalytic effects of microelements). In order to preserve the quality parameters, no precipitates are allowed to develop and no chemical reactions...
