Characterization of celluloses by means of viscoelastic parameters
M. Řehula, R. Adámek
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):215-220
In tablet formulation it is necessary to start from viscoelastic parameters of the excipients employed. Plasticity and elasticity of excipients are influenced by the type of bonds which are being formed in the course of the compaction process. The present paper evaluates the viscoelastic properties of selected fillers intended for direct compaction of tablets. The determinations included cellulose powder, microcrystalline celluloses Avicel PH 101, Avicel PH 102, Avicel PH 103, Avicel PH 200, Avicel PH 301, and Ceolus KG 802. Elasticity of the excipients was evaluated by means of Young's modulus of elasticity and differential elastic potential energy....
Effect of montelukast on the treatment of asthma bronchiale in pediatric patients with perennial allergic rhinitis
L. Bartošíková, J. Nečas, T. Bartošík, M. Pavlík, P. Fráňa, L. Fráňa
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):221-224
Antileukotrienes represent a group of medicaments used in the treatment of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Montelukast is a drug belonging to the group of medicaments blocking leukotriene receptors (Cys-LT 1 receptor). It is a specific leukotriene receptor antagonist with strong anti-inflammatory effects designed for oral administration. The study monitors the effectiveness and safety of the treatment with montelukast, administered once a day in the evening in 5mg dose, over a 4-month period, to a group of children with the diagnosis of mild persistent bronchial asthma with deterioration of problems after exercise and with perennial allergic...
Impact of demographic factors on consumption of pharmaceuticals in the Czech Republic
L. Práznovcová
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):225-228
The present analytical study examines the dynamic increase in the consumption of pharmaceuticals in the years 1995-2005. In this period, the average annual increase in expenses for pharmaceuticals was 367 crowns per 1 inhabitant, the rate of expenditure being more dynamic in comparison with total health expenditures. The increase resulted from the increase in the average price of one packet. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences between individual age group. The consumption of pharmaceuticals in financial representation in the age group over 60 years is more than 8 times higher in comparison with the consumption in the age group...

Therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids and synthetic derivatives affecting human endocannabinoid system
J. Peč, E. Riedingerová, J. Martin, Z. Kršková, J. Dušek
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):195-207
From the pharmaceutical and medicinal point of view Cannabis sativa L. is an interesting and perspective material. It contains biologically active cannabinoids whose isolation and identification in the 1960's enabled a rapid research that has been bringing interesting results to this day. Especially revealing the human endocannabinoid system and the pharmacological effects of cannabinoids or derived synthetic compounds are the most interesting areas. The research in this field continues also toward pharmaceutical dosage forms with convenient route of administration and pharmacokinetics parameters to be used in clinical practice. Cannabinoids open completely...
History and the present state of hypolipidaemic therapy
R. Bartas, J. Kolář
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):208-214
History of hypolipidaemic therapy is closely connected with the development of the knowledge of atherosclerosis pathogenesis and lipid metabolism. Isolation of statins (and also their synthesis) and their subsequent implementation in practice were a decisive discovery that affected contemporary cardiology. Statins rank among the most widely utilized drugs and some of them belong to very commercially successful preparations. There are very few therapeutic groups the therapeutic contribution of which is documented so well. Several prospective drugs with different mechanisms of effect are being developed at present.

Medicinal preparations in Prague pharmacies at the end of the 16th century
P. Drábek
Čes. slov. farm. 2008, 57(5):229-233
The paper compares the contents of a rates list of drugs of 1592 with two drug inventories of 1585, focusing on medicinal and galenical preparations. The list was made by the physician Professor Adam Zalužanský of Zalužany, and the two inventories record the estates of deceased Prague pharmacists. The comparisons reveal that at least 350 sorts of medicinal preparations were available in the two pharmacies (without distilled liquids). It is surprising that only one third of them was kept in both pharmacies. The rates list, which includes only selected items, contains 85 sorts of medicinal preparations. The paper takes also account of two period pharmacopoeias,...
