The present article discusses the results of the research into the phytochemical profile and immunomodulatory activity of Galii veri herba (Galium verum L., Rubiaceae) ethanolic extracts. The extracts under study were obtained from the plant material by means of maceration technique with 20% aqueous ethanol solution (fluid extract I), 60% aqueous ethanol solution (fluid extract II) and 96% ethanol (fluid extract III) on heating. In the substances obtained, the content of hydroxycinnamic derivatives, flavonoids and polyphenols were determined spectrophotometrically; polysaccharides were quantified gravimetrically;...

Biosurfactants and their role in the inhibition of the biofilmforming pathogens

Karolína Englerová, Radomíra Nemcová, Eva Styková

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(3):107-112 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.015

Resistance of pathogenic bacteria is currently one of the major medical problems. Most microbial infections are based on the formation of biofilms, which are a significant reservoir of pathogens. The aim of this study is to determine the antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity of biosurfactants isolated from intestinal lactobacilli and marine bacteria. Biosurfactants (BS) isolated from the strains L. fermentum 2I3, L. fermentum B2/6, L. reuteri SL16, L. reuteri B6/1, S. luteola 3/22, Brevibacillus sp. 4/9, Brevibacillus sp. 2/30 and B. amyloliquefaciens 1/6K significantly (p < 0.001) inhibited the biofilm formation of S. aureus CCM 3953 and...

Inflammatory bowel disease: factors involved in pathogenesis

Boris Dudík, Hana Kiňová Sepová, Andrea Bilková

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(3):95-100 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.013

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in developed countries increases every year. The aetiology is still not completely understood and its clarification is a key prerequisite for effective prophylaxis and therapy. IBD is most-likely caused by a combination of several factors: environmental, genetic, immunological, and disruption of intestinal microbiota composition - dysbiosis. "Westernization" of lifestyle and urbanization seem to be among the most serious environmental factors. The pathogenesis is also influenced by the imbalance between the TH1 and TH2 cellular response and the expression of genes involved in T...

Pharmacy, pharmacists and drugs in the Terezín ghetto

Tomáš Arndt, František Dohnal, Jan Babica

Čes. slov. farm. 2018, 67(3):116-129 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2018.017

The article describes the phenomenon of a pharmacy in the Jewish ghetto in Terezín (Theresienstadt) in connection with the local healthcare system and the history of this ghetto. It lists the names of the Czechoslovak Jewish pharmacists who passed through this ghetto, including their fates, whether they survived or were murdered in extermination concentration camps or died as a result of the cruel living conditions in the ghetto. The article discusses the fate of the so-called Mischlingskinder ("mixed children", i.e., persons deemed to have both "Aryan" and Jewish ancestry) and "Aryan" men and women from the so-called "mixed" marriages. In a...

The quantitative contents of 40 carboxylic acids, with the prevalence of hexadecanedioic, lignocerinic, behenic, azelaic, palmitic and benzoic acids, and 39 components of essential oil were determined in the extracts of the bark of Sorbus aucuparia by the GC-MS method. The quantitative contents of 6 phenolic compounds, i.e., chlorogenic, caffeic, and gallic acids, catechin, quercetin, and apigenin-7-glucoside were determined by the HPLC method in the ethanolic extract of the bark of Sorbus aucuparia.
