Hypoglycemic episodes are a frequent and serious complication in both types of diabetes mellitus. The risk of hypoglycemic conditions can be managed by a coated pellet dosage form, which can release glucose in a delayed regime to achieve the maximum estimated effect of antidiabetics. The pellet cores, intended for coating with ethylcellulose, were prepared consisting of four osmotically active excipients: crosscarmellose (Ac-Di-Sol®), a mixture of microcrystalline cellulose and carmellose sodium (Avicel® RC 591), carboxymethyl starch sodium (Vivastar® P 5000) and macrogol 6000, respectively. The aim of this...

Čes. slov. farm. 2014, 63(5):213-216 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2014.040
This experimental study describes the preparation of a veterinary medicated premix containing tetracycline hydrochloride for oral administration to aquatic animals. For the manufacture of the premix, commercially produced animal feed is used, which is intended for consumption in the form of pellets that were coated with a mixture of chlortetracycline hydrochloride and other excipients. Feed pellets were combined with a mixture of an active substance and excipients with a large specific surface (colloidal silica - Aerosil® 200) allowing an easy adhesion to the surface of the pellets, and a solid polymer with a low glass transition point...
Optimization of technological processes for the preparation of tablets with a low content of warfarin by direct compression

Warfarin is a drug with anarrow therapeutic index. It is commercially available in the form of tablets with immediate release from many generic manufacturers. Though attempts are being made to replace it with new drugs, in the U.S.A.it is still the antithrombotic agent of the first choice. In the past there were cases when after replacement of the original brand preparation with the generic one, the patient suffered from complications such as the loss of control of anticoagulation and increased frequency of patient's visits to the physician. One of the critical parameters of tablets containing an active substance with anarrow therapeutic index (NTI)...

Lyophilisation of protein-based drugs
Andrej Murányi, Mária Vitková
Čes. slov. farm. 2014, 63(5):199-205 | DOI: 10.36290/csf.2014.038
Lyophilisation is a well-established method for drying of various substances with a wide range of applications in the pharmaceutical area. During the last decade its relevance increases with a number of therapeutically used proteins. A sensitive protein drug may undergo several changes, like unfolding and loss of activity due to various stresses during the lyophilisation process. Understanding of these processes (freezing, primary drying, secondary drying) is fundamental for manufacturing of a drug product with desired properties, namely its safety and efficacy. In order to reduce costs and increase the quality, new technologies are being rapidly developed...

The article aims to outline the historical development of treatment of diabetes in Czechoslovakia. Information has been obtained mainly from two Czech journals, Časopis lékařů českých (The Journal of Czech Physicians, published since 1862) and Praktický lékař (The General Practitioner, published since 1921). Until the discovery of insulin, the treatment of diabetes was based on the use of different diets and a great benefit was obtained by spa treatment. In 1923, imported insulin appeared on the market in Czechoslovakia; insulin injections or substances from which insulin was prepared. In the years 1923-1945, insulin was produced by...
